The Class of Arachnida. So many of us Australian have this phobia. Arachnophobia! They have eight legs, their bodies are divided into two sections and its always a screaming argument with the siblings of who is getting the broom to smash the one crawling up the wall. The spider is another very common pest in our daily lives and in Southeast Queensland we encounter a wide variety of spiders hanging around our homes and work places from the timid huntsman to the dangerous Redback. While very common, precaution must be taken with some species as there are some venomous spiders in Southeast Queensland which can cause serious harm if bitten. Urban Pest control has developed ways to keep these creatures at bay and there are ways to keep these eight legged freaks out of the house year round. Redback spiders belong to the Family Theridiidae, which is found worldwide. A Redback’s bite occurs frequently, particularly over the summer months. Only the Female bite is dangerous to humans, causing serious illness or death. However, since Redback Spiders rarely leave their webs, humans are not likely to be bitten unless a body part such as a hand is put directly into the web. The venom acts directly on the nerves, resulting in release and subsequent depletion of neurotransmitters.
Keep an eye out where you’re walking, especially during the warmer seasons.

Fun Fact, the notorious Black Widow Spider, found in the United States, is a close relative of the Redback Spider, and only differs in appearance by the absence of a red dorsal stripe, as shown above.
